The New Year.

I am not a person who makes resolutions, never have been, never will be. I am a live in the moment person. I don’t give myself deadlines, I rarely put things in terms of numbers because that doesn’t work for me. I don’t want to be stressed. I think 99% of a goal is how you get there. I would like to run a marathon. I would like for it to be in 2015. Will it? Is that goal in stone? No. Life happens and I don’t ever want to be in a position where I’m beating myself up over missing a goal because something else awesome came up.

That said, it isn’t that I DON’T believe in setting goals. I do. I just prefer mine to be a bit more broad and have a bit more flexibility. It fits me better. So here are some of my goals to make 2014 the happiest year yet.

Save money.
Enjoy my last semester at Missouri State.
Skype with my family more often.
Stress less about things I can’t control – things work out.
Don’t be such a slave to the scale.
14 in 14
Take myself less seriously.
Run a sub-2:15 half marathon. Okay…sometimes I put numbers on my goals 🙂

What are your quality type goals for 2014?

Finals Week, Snow and Running With Soul!

Saying this last week has been “busy” would be a huge understatement.  I’ve been running around like a crazy person trying to finish what seems like a thousand different term papers (more like three or four).  But they are FINALLY all done and I’m down to my last final this afternoon!  Now, we wait for the grades.

It seems like my last fall semester as an undergrad has just flown by.  I swear, it just started.  Didn’t it?  Don’t get me wrong, I’m THRILLED it’s almost over but with as busy as I was, I feel like I haven’t gotten to enjoy anything.  You know what I have enjoyed though?  All this snow!!

So pretty, right?!  Ok, so Springfield, Missouri isn’t EXACTLY equipped to deal with almost a foot of snow being dumped in the course of less than a week.  Not at all.  It was mayhem and public schools have been out for three days.  Which means I have been off work for three days.  SO awesome when you’re trying to scrape up money to buy Christmas presents, amiright?!

This has also meant moving workouts indoor because A) who shovels sidewalks?  and B) I’m not trying to die by getting hit by a car running in the street.  I’ve now completed TWO runs over three miles since resuming running again and they have been fantastic!  I’m still very closely monitoring how my knee feels and reminding myself that cross training is JUST as important now as it was when I was in my break.

Finally, head on over to Too Cute Runner and check out the feature she did on me!  So glad she allowed me to be a part of it and share my story with her readers.  Give her blog a follow!

Until next time

The Comeback

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! I’m finally back in Missouri after a VERY long travel day. What should have been 8 hours turned into 12, two of which were spent on the tarmac at Denver International Airport. It’s the last week of classes and I made it back shortly before midnight, yesterday night. Can you say stressed?!

All that aside, I had a wonderful week of running and enjoying the California weather. Just before I left, I started running short distances on the ‘mill, just trying to get back in the flow. My IT band still feels a little tight but so far I am pain free! Massaging and foam rolling seems to be helping, along with the strength training.

Being in California can make keeping up with my fitness difficult, as can any vacation. But it was great to get back to basics and run with my favorite pal, Riley.

We keep our distances short but she is a great buddy. Never gets in the way, rarely slows down to sniff things. I’m willing to look past her dragging me down a hill on Monday. Running with a dog CAN be fun and rewarding, but be smart doing it! Your little doggie has to work up to it and certain breeds are better than others for certain kinds of running. Keep an eye on their exertion level and always carry water for them.

Happy running!
